Pupils are introduced to music as a live experience and are encouraged to actively involve themselves in performing, composing and listening activities. During the four years pupils will develop vocal, instrumental, keyboard and performance skills. They will learn to read and perform from a variety of notations and use these as a means of recording their compositions.
Specific objectives are as follows:
- To provide pupils with an enjoyable learning experience leading to a desire to continue with their exploration and development of their own musical concepts.
- To give pupils the confidence to compose and perform in front of others whether as a soloist or in a pair/group.
- To provide pupils with the knowledge and understanding of the differences between and combinations of various musical elements, structures and ideas.
- To provide pupils with a knowledge of a variety of genres and styles from different cultures/periods.
The music department is a spacious and well-equipped learning environment. The keyboard room offers excellent facilities for pupils to experience music making. The programme of extra curricular activities is designed to allow opportunities for musically able or interested pupils to acquire a higher level of performance skills. Our choir performs regularly throughout the year and large scale productions take place. The County Music Service offers tuition in strings, woodwind, percussion and guitar.
